How does blood separate in a centrifuge?
Blood is composed of a combination of cellular and liquid elements that include red & white blood cells and platelets. These elements are suspended in a yellow substance known as plasma. As the blood is spun it separates into layers inside the tube based upon their weights. Since the red blood cells are the heaviest they sink to the bottom, while the least dense, plasma, is directed towards the top of the tube.
